Battery Test of IPhone’s IOS 4 vs. IOS 3

Not all of the new features of in iOS 4, primarily multitasking, are supported by the iPhone 3G because of its limited memory and slower processor. Despite the limited features, a lot of complaints have been heard of slow performance of iOS 4 on the iPhone 3G. That is why we decided to check whether the OS update also negatively affected battery life.

According to Lifehacker’s instructions, an iPhone 3G that was running iOS 4 was downgraded by us to iOS 3.1.3, and after that a number of tasks were run. Then, that phone, the iPhone 3G, was upgraded to iOS4, and the same set of tasks was run.

We found out that the iOS 3-configured iPhone 3G lasted 5 percent shorter (10 minutes) than the iPhone 3G with iOS 4. It is not such a great difference, however, I expected battery life after updating the OS to drop, not to rise. It is interesting that the application downloads were faster with the upgraded OS, but a rented movie was downloaded faster on the iOS 3 iPhone.

After all the tests were carried out it became clear that the updated iPhone 3GS lasted longer by 35 minutes (14 percent) than with iOS 3.
